The 10 Best Shojo Anime Couples That Became Canon

Watching shojo anime is my Roman Empire, my raison d'etre. As someone who prefers to be in the audience rather than a participant in romantic relationships, gushing over fictional couples is my way of experiencing love. I’ve been an avid fan who has consumed shojo from the late ‘90s to now. Though it’s had its ups and downs over the years, shojo has been seeing a renaissance recently, which means more couples for me to cheer on. As one does for the fictional characters they love, here are my favorite shojo anime couples who made it official.

The Shojo Renaissance From Fruits Basket to A Sign of Affection

Shojo anime don’t always get the same visibility as shonen, so when studios announced reboots of beloved classics like Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You and long-overdue adaptations of popular shojo manga like A Sign of Affection, shojo fans like myself no longer felt like we were inside an echo chamber. Lately, it feels like the industry is finally acknowledging the demand for women-targeted content. Seeing an influx of shojo anime adapted from newer manga and light novels in the last year has been a treat. We’re already off to a strong start in 2024 with A Sign of Affection and The Demon Prince of Momochi House, so witnessing what’s been dubbed in the community as “The Shojo Renaissance” fills me with excitement for what else may follow after these shows’ success.

Heaven Official’s Blessing and the Popularity of Donghua

I’ve asked some of my friends if they’ve ever seen donghua (Chinese animation) and they usually responded with, “What’s that?” I don’t blame them. Until recently, donghua was considered niche for overseas viewers like myself, especially when you consider that it either wasn’t accessible to English audiences or was only available on YouTube, which you’d have to go down the rabbit hole to even come across.

What You Need to Know for Heaven Official’s Blessing Season 2

After waiting 800 years for any news of the Heaven Official’s Blessing (Tian Guan Cì Fu) Season 2 release date, I’m beyond thrilled to see Xie Lian and Hua Cheng grace my screen again with their ethereal beauty and captivating relationship. Their story is far from over, though it’s been a while since we last saw them in donghua (Chinese animation) form in 2020. So here’s your refresher on the series’ origins, what’s happened so far in the story, where it’ll go in Season 2 and when to expect the episodes to drop.

Why Link Click Cannot Be Missed

I’ve sung praise for donghua (Chinese animation) in the past, but one that sits high on my list of favorites is Link Click (Shi Guang Da Li Ren). I had no idea what I was getting into when I first watched the show. At the time I would put any donghua I had access to on my watchlist. By the time season one wrapped up, I couldn’t wait for season two. While I eagerly wait for its return, here are all the reasons why you should check it out. Who knows, it might be your favorite show too!

15 Essential Romance Anime on Crunchyroll from Horimiya to My Dress-Up Darling

Whether you want to fill in the empty void in your life or need something to make your heart skip a beat, romance anime is there to treat you right. I’m by no means a romance expert, but I have watched my fair share of romance anime. I’m here to give you the rundown on the shows you should watch if it’s your first foray into the genre. Even if you don’t fall in love with all of these recs, you might find yourself smitten with at least one of them!

FEATURE: Top 5 BLUELOCK Moments That Made Our Jaws Drop

Sports anime are on the same level as Shonen anime when it comes to hype. Out of all the simulcasts I’m currently watching, BLUELOCK is the one that gets me excited every week. I haven’t read the manga so I went into the show blind, but as soon as the first episode ended, I knew I was in for a ride. So, as one does for anything they’re hyperfixated on, here are my favorite jaw-dropping moments from the show.

Anime Awards 2023 Category Spotlight: "Must Protect At All Costs" Character

Do you ever look at an anime character and think, I need to protect them no matter what? It’s especially true for the characters nominated under the category “Must Protect at All Costs” because, well, we must protect their smiles at all costs. So if you’re like me and can’t choose one character to take home the trophy, join the Protection Squad and see why these characters will go down in history as the most precious beans in anime!

FEATURE: The Telltale Signs That an Anime Character Is 2 Days From Retirement

Anyone who’s watched anime can probably recognize death flags from a mile away. Whether it’s the mom with a side ponytail or the protagonist getting hit by the isekai truck, these telltale signs make it easier to predict (but not stomach) characters who are about to die. Let’s take a look at some characters whose deaths were inevitable given the clues that their respective shows dropped.

It's Just a Phase

Night had settled in by the time Hằng finished hauling in the last cardboard box filled with her belongings into the apartment. Hands on her hips, she let out a huff as she surveyed her new home. The studio apartment, with its chalky white walls and simple hardwood flooring, left its personality up to her. Over the next few weeks, Hằng would slowly transform the space into a writer’s den: bookshelves lined up against an entire wall, a large desk littered with journals, stationery, books, her laptop, and a cup of matcha tea, book quotes enlarged on framed posters, and piles of sherpa blankets on the sofa and bed.

Moonlit Presage

A chime ripples the still night, unheard by those who dance in the garden of dreams. In a rowboat that weaves its way through Lunea’s water canals, a hooded figure sits with a fox that’s curled around her shoulders. The fox’s vaporous form emits a white haze, her eyes golden and glowing. As their destination approaches, her ears prick up. The fox jumps off the young woman’s shoulders, leaving smoky tracks that dissipate before she lands atop the bow. All the while, the bell’s song resonates from around the fox’s neck.

The Heike Story is a Beautiful Modern Retelling of a Historical Epic

Every anime season always has one underrated gem, and for me this past fall, that gem was The Heike Story—a historical anime adaptation of the epic prose, The Tale of the Heike. Having studied Japanese history in college, I was curious to see how the story would translate into anime form. Once I finished watching it, I came to a conclusion: The Heike Story is not a show—it’s an experience.

Obey Me! Mobile Game Gets Official Manga Adaptation

The world of popular romance simulation mobile game Obey Me! One Master to Rule Them All is officially getting a manga adaptation! Titled Obey Me! How Ranking of Kings Reframes the Hero's Journey

Who doesn’t love an adventure story with fleshed-out characters, an engaging plot, fascinating world-building and underlying themes that tie everything together? So far, Ranking of Kings checks all these boxes. Take a look at Bojji—how can you not love and support a protagonist like him? Seriously though, Ranking of Kings works its magic on the portrayal of characters and their motivations. On a surface level, the show is a fantasy adventure with the Hero’s Journey as the traditional narrative template. But every episode has revealed that characters’ archetypes are more complex than they initially appear.

Travel Back in Time with Japanese Historical Anime

We’ve seen our share of isekai packed with fantasy lore and sci-fi shows with technologically advanced societies, but what about anime that allows us to travel to the past and vicariously experience a time period before we were around? History buffs and anime fans alike will find plenty to love in historical anime about Japan, where stories take place throughout history, like the Edo Period and the Taisho Period. Some have more accurate depictions of their settings than others, but know that these shows are teeming with Japanese tradition, culture, language and historic events.

How Hyouka and Its Characters Turn the Mundane Into the Extraordinary

If anyone has ever told you that you’re overanalyzing things, they haven’t met the characters of Hyouka—and I say this in the most endearing way possible. Hyouka is a special show, not just personally, but also visually and story-wise. It centers around the phrase “life is what you make it” and asks, what does leading a normal life really mean? The show doesn’t directly answer, but it does play around with the idea that leading any life, no matter how dull or exciting, is better when you’re connected to friends and family.

The Saint’s Magic Power Is Omnipotent Is the Perfect Slice-of-Life Isekai

In the world(s) of isekai, we’ve been recently blessed (pun intended) with The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent—a show that, rather than focused on epic action and revenge plots, hones in on good vibes and wholesomeness! But that only scratches the surface of why this show is the perfect slice of life isekai. Originally a novel series that received a light novel and manga serialization, The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent features a female protagonist (whose name basically translates to “saint”), an ikemen harem, and a nice balance of comedy and romance!

Anime Cinematography & Capturing Incredible Storytelling Through Visuals

I enjoy watching anime for many reasons, but what I really love is when an anime’s art and scene direction elevates the storytelling in a beautiful and nuanced way. Directors who take creative liberties in setting the tone or conveying a message for certain scenes have my utmost admiration. Whether it’s camera framing, lighting or character blocking, these artistic decisions transform scenes and give a whole new meaning to the story, world-building and characters. I’m no film expert, but I do want to share my appreciation for some of my favorite shows by picking apart one scene where I believe the art and scene direction works exceptionally well.

While some anime fans enjoy the same old tropes, others are searching for unique and refreshing content.
